When brännvin - a word originally meaning distilled wine but now referring specifically to vodka - first came to Sweden in the Middle Ages, it was used to make medicines and gunpowder. By the seventeenth century, it had become a popular drink, and home stills sprang up all around the country. Spices and herbs were added to enhance the flavor of the brännvin and because they were believed to have magical powers.
